Rauff Hakeem was the\nchief guest on the occasion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nhis welcome remarks, High Commissioner of Pakistan, Maj. Gen. (R) Dr. Shahid\nAhmad Hashmat elaborated that the foundation of strong brotherhood between\nPakistan and Sri Lanka was laid in 1948 when the former Prime Minister of then\n\u201cCeylon\u201d, Hon. D.S. Senenayake, visited Pakistan. He said the relationship\nbetween our two people has existed for over two thousand years. These relations\nare further cemented by the commonality of eternal values of universal peace\nand love, espoused both by Buddhism and Islam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\ntalking about regional security situation, the High Commissioner explained\nthat, despite provocation, Pakistan has demonstrated prudence and extreme\nrestraint as a responsible state. He also said that Pakistan supports peaceful\nresolution of all bilateral and regional disputes through meaningful\nnegotiations and mediation. He also appreciated Government of Sri Lanka\u2019s\nsupport for promotion of peace and harmony in South Asia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr.\nShahid Ahmad Hashmat announced that the Government of Pakistan, through its\nHigh Commission, will be awarding 1000 scholarships to the Sri Lankan students\nin diverse fields and will undertake exchange of faculty members and students programmes.\nHe added that modalities are being discussed with concerned authorities to\nestablish a world-class high-tech university in Sri Lanka under the auspices of\nCOMSATS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During\nhis address, Chief Guest, Hon. Rauff Hakeem paid a rich tribute to the Government\nand people of Pakistan for always being supportive to Sri Lanka in the time of\nneed. He recalled the robust relations between the two countries and said that Pakistan\nand Sri Lanka have always maintained close, cordial and mutually supportive\nrelations which are broad-based and multifaceted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nlarge number of guests, including Speaker Parliament Hon. Karu Jayasuriya,\nOpposition Leader Hon.
