The Pakistan-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement
Pakistan and Sri Lanka
reached a new level in bilateral trade and economic cooperation
following entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in June
2005. Sri Lanka is the first
country with which Pakistan entered into such an agreement.
The
PSLFTA has helped expand Sri Lankan exports to Pakistan by a
significant margin of 60% during 2005-6, thereby reducing the trade
gap by 21% in favor of Sri Lanka.
The FTA has made it possible to earn a
significantly higher
profit by trading in commodities included in the 100% duty
concessionary lists of Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The lists of such items
will keep growing each year.
These encouraging results have infused tremendous interest among
Pakistani
and Sri Lankan business communities, who now enjoy a 'special-door access' to the
markets in each other's country.
Non-traditional
items of trade are now being increasingly explored by the business
community.
